Antiques dealer Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows of England in which she documents the treasures she finds buried in. A mysterious letter invites her to the little village of Bewlay hidden in the countryside far from any other, she sets off by train, with her companion one day late.
On her arrival she discovers that the mysterious person who summoned her is nowhere to be seen. Her assistant never arrives. Landowners are obstinate and refuse acces to his barrow. The locals are afraid of this woman as she is a solo traveler. wears trousers.
